What a clear explanation of heating water with a wood fire! This is a long term goal for me, so I’ll be saving this piece for the future.
Also, do you have any issues with the draw having the elbow bends in the stove pipe? I’m still deliberating on whether to go out the roof or the wall with the piping.
My understanding is that if the chimney is tall enough, draw isn't an issue. I seem to remember the guy from the chimney company telling me I had to go 3 feet higher because of two elbows.
If you keep it inside and run it through the roof, you might catch more heat in the house, but I'd hate to cut a hole in the roof. Water always finds a way.
I moved to Mexico 20 years and was surprised on how they use and create energy. My current home uses a water holding tank and a pos water heater. I am looking for ways to go off grid! Thanks for the information.
Yep… I live off grid… it’s very freeing actually. It’s not that hard. Once you’ve got a few things in place… the idea of spending upwards from 100k to have grid convenience w plumbing and such … is just asinine to me now. I bought a place w a shack that has an ibc tote that I need to haul water, to fill every two months… very easy… and it’s heated w a wood stove and has a simple all I really need solar setup … the cost of the land w the shack and existing infrastructure was 25k… I have added some other structures and solar and various things for another 25k and will be adding a rain water collection system and some fencing over the next year… there are improvements I will be making that are all very DIY … it’s amazing that for less than 60k … I can have a wonderful home on a beautiful 1.25 acre and feel very comfortable … no elec bills, I pay less for water but eventually that will go away… I will never have backed up toilets or showers or sewer drains… right after I moved in an acquaintance of mine had to spend 10k on a backed up plumbing issue … I will never have to worry… I use a compost toilet and my wash water goes directly in the garden. It’s my pleasure to not have to spend money I can’t even earn to live the way they set it up. The world is trapped in ignorance.

Thanks, this really helps with my pros and cons list for either application!
Here! Here! Bravo!!!

We had a box of copper pipes to heat our water on the roof of the carport for years, now being replaced by photoelectric panels and a battery wall.
